Advocates for Same-Sex Marriage: Debunking Misconceptions
There is a common misconception that Christians believe in stoning homosexuals based on a passage in Leviticus. However, this charge is completely unfounded. To address this, we can simply ask a question: “Do you believe that a specific act mentioned in Leviticus is applicable today, outside of the context of ancient Israel?”
If they answer “yes,” we can respond with, “I don’t.” If they answer “no,” we can agree with them. Either way, this flawed argument is put to rest.
It’s important to note that we do not live under the laws of Leviticus. Old Testament civil law is not valid in the church age we currently live in. However, what is relevant and applicable today is the moral law found in the Old Testament.
In the ongoing debate about same-sex marriage, believers are often hesitant to mention the moral law found in the book of Leviticus. But it’s worth considering the historical context. At the time the Torah was given, the Hebrews were surrounded by the permissive Canaanites, who practiced same-sex marriage. Today, the Canaanites are extinct, while the Jewish people still exist. This simple reality highlights the error of allowing sexual preference to determine marital status.
Some argue that “love” should be the sole basis for marriage. But if that’s the case, how can our courts deny marriage to someone who loves their cat? Statistics show that only marriage between one man and one woman creates societal stability and sustenance. No other definition of marriage offers the same positive benefits to a culture.
These truths about marriage are not new. Leviticus emphasized them thousands of years before our present social experimentation began. In the book of Genesis, God promised Abraham that He would create a people set apart for His purposes. When the Hebrews were enslaved in Egypt, they absorbed many idolatrous practices. So when God called them out of bondage, He needed to reprogram them to worship Him in holiness. Leviticus served as a means of reprogramming.
While much of Leviticus is abrogated in the New Testament, the spiritual principles embedded in its ceremonies, rituals, and laws are timeless. They represent the very nature of God, including the prohibitions on homosexuality and same-sex marriage.
At this moment in American history, no document speaks louder than the book of Leviticus. It was meant to set apart the Israelites and morally differentiate them from the surrounding nations. Disobedience to God’s precepts led to their downfall, while obedience brought prosperity.
It is crucial for nations that have legalized same-sex marriage to be informed by and obey the timeless spiritual principles found in Leviticus. Those who disregard these principles do so at their own peril.
