Drone Strike on Moscow Hits Buildings, Russia Claims More Were Shot Down
Russian authorities have accused Ukraine of launching a daring drone attack on Moscow early Monday. The attack resulted in one of the drones falling near the Defense Ministry’s main headquarters. In response, the Russian military unleashed new strikes on port infrastructure in southern Ukraine.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that there were no casualties when the drones struck two nonresidential buildings in the city. However, a Ukrainian drone did manage to hit an ammunition depot in Russian-annexed Crimea, causing a major highway to be temporarily closed.
The incident in Moscow saw one of the drones fall on the Komsomolsky highway, causing damage to nearby buildings. It remains unclear whether the Defense Ministry’s headquarters was the intended target or if the drone was heading elsewhere in central Moscow.
Another drone attack hit an office building in southern Moscow, causing significant damage to several upper floors. Emergency workers are currently assessing the damage, and traffic has been halted in the areas where the drones fell.
Ukrainian authorities have not claimed responsibility for the strike, which marks the second drone attack on the Russian capital this month. In the previous attack on July 4, the Russian military successfully defended against four out of five drones, with the fifth being jammed and forced down.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the growing intensity of drone attacks on Russian regions. He stated that measures are being taken to address the issue, but did not provide specific details.
In addition to the attack on Moscow, Ukrainian drones also targeted an ammunition depot in northern Crimea. This attack resulted in a halt in traffic on a major highway and railway crossing the Black Sea peninsula. However, railway traffic was restored several hours later.
The head of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, ordered the evacuation of several villages within a five-kilometer radius of the depot that was hit. Russian authorities claimed to have shot down or jammed 11 attacking drones, while the Defense Ministry reported that 11 of the 17 drones were jammed and crashed into the Black Sea.
Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s digital transformation minister, commented on the attacks, stating that they demonstrate Russia’s weakening electronic warfare capabilities. He warned that there may be more attacks in the future.
According to Ukrainian officials, Russian forces also targeted port infrastructure on the Danube River in southern Ukraine with exploding drones. This attack resulted in seven people being wounded and the destruction of a grain hangar and other cargo storage. Ukrainian forces managed to down three of the attacking drones.
The Kremlin has described these strikes as retribution for Ukraine’s previous attack on the Kerch Bridge, which connects Russia with Crimea. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the attack on the bridge, stating that it was a legitimate target due to Russia’s use of it for military purposes.
Since Moscow canceled a grain deal with Ukraine, Russia has launched repeated attacks on Odesa, a key hub for exporting grain. These attacks have caused significant damage to the city, including the Transfiguration Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
UNESCO has condemned the attacks on heritage sites and plans to send a mission to assess the damage. The Russian military denies targeting the Transfiguration Cathedral and claims it was likely struck by a Ukrainian air defense missile.
Overall, a total of 10 people have been wounded in Russian attacks on Ukraine in the past 24 hours. The situation remains tense as both sides continue to engage in hostilities.
