Durham’s Testimony Suggests Schiff’s Zinger in Trump-Russia Probe
Special Counsel John Durham Takes a Jab at Rep. Adam Schiff During Testimony
During a House Judiciary Committee hearing, Special Counsel John Durham engaged in a heated exchange with Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) regarding the Russia investigation. The tension arose when Schiff questioned Durham about the 2016 Trump Tower meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer, as detailed in Robert Mueller’s report.
Schiff asked Durham if he was aware that the meeting was based on a Russian official offering dirt on Hillary Clinton to the Trump campaign. In response, Durham delivered a clever retort, stating, “People get phone calls all the time from individuals who claim to have information like that.”
Not one to back down, Schiff pressed further, asking if Durham was suggesting that the son of a presidential candidate regularly receives calls from foreign governments offering dirt on their election rivals. Durham’s witty response, “I don’t think this is unique in your experience,” elicited chuckles from those in the room.

Durham’s remark seemed to reference a past incident involving Schiff, where he fell victim to Russian prank callers posing as a Ukrainian politician. In the audio, Schiff can be heard expressing his willingness to accept compromising material on Trump, including nude photos, and involve the FBI in the investigation.

Durham’s appearance before the committee focused on his report criticizing the FBI’s handling of the investigation into alleged links between Trump’s campaign and Russia. While Durham acknowledged that the Trump Tower meeting was ill-advised, he emphasized that it did not involve discussions about Hillary Clinton.
Schiff countered by stating that conspiring to obtain incriminating opposition research from a hostile government is illegal. However, Mueller’s investigation, which concluded in 2019, did not find sufficient evidence of a criminal conspiracy between Trump’s campaign and Russia. Additionally, Mueller declined to charge Trump Jr. in connection to the Trump Tower meeting, as it did not yield damaging information on Clinton.
