Dwyane Wade Blamed ‘Anti-LGBTQ Policies’ For Leaving Florida — That’s Not What He Said 4 Years Ago
Dwyane Wade Clarifies Reason for Leaving Florida
Former NBA player Dwyane Wade recently made headlines when he claimed that his family left Florida due to “anti-LGBTQ policies” implemented by Governor Ron DeSantis. However, Wade’s reasoning for leaving the state in 2019 was quite different.
Family Comes First
When Wade first moved from Florida to Los Angeles, it was because he had retired from the NBA and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, had a job in LA. “My home is where my family is,” he told People Magazine in February of 2020.
But Wade has also been in the public eye for his support of his biological son, who began identifying as transgender in 2020. He has spoken out against policies like Florida’s HB 1557, which he believes would make his family feel uncomfortable in the state.
Public Battles
Wade has also faced public battles with his ex-wife over their shared child’s gender identity. Despite allegations that he embraced the gender and name change for financial gain, Wade has denied these claims and continues to support his child’s identity.
As Wade said via Instagram, “While none of us are surprised by Siohvaughn’s attempt to fight Zaya’s identity and her unwavering attempt to drag my name through the mud, I’m very disappointed that she continuously finds ways of centering herself and HER needs, without regard to her children.”
