Dwyane Wade moved away from Florida because family no longer ‘comfortable there’

Dwyane Wade Leaves Florida: “My Family Would Not Be Accepted”

Former
Miami Heat
point guard
Dwyane Wade
admitted in a recent interview that he’s moved out of
Florida.

Wade confessed in an interview with Showtime Headliners’s Rachel Nichols that his family “would not be
accepted” in the state anymore. The point guard played 15 seasons with the Miami Heat and now has two children, one
being a 15-year-old transgender girl, Zaya. Nichols asked Wade what he had to say to the Florida lawmakers who pursue
legislation such as its
anti-lewd
law and its
parental rights
law prohibiting teachers from discussing sexual orientations with young children.

“That’s another reason why I don’t live in that state. A lot of people don’t know that,” Wade told Nichols. “I have to
make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions.”

Wade has supported his child’s transition from the beginning, when Zaya was 12 years old, but noted that the
identifying markers were present when his child was as young as
3. He even filed a petition to change Zaya’s name and gender on the birth certificate
despite protest
from Zaya’s biological mother Siohvaughn Funches-Wade.

Florida’s Anti-Transgender Legislation

Currently, the Florida Senate has a
bill in the works
making it a felony to provide “sex-reassignment prescriptions or procedures” to minors. The bill has already passed
the House.
