Dylan Mulvaney admits Bud Light mishap at awards show: ‘Time for a beer!’
Social Media Influencer and Transgender Activist Jokes About Bud Light Boycott
Social media influencer and transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney made a lighthearted comment about the boycott affecting Bud Light during an appearance at an awards show on Sunday night.
Mulvaney, a transgender woman who was announced as the breakout creator of 2023 at the Streamy Awards, took the stage to accept the award dedicated to online content creators.
Celebrating with a Beer
During Mulvaney’s acceptance speech, the influencer playfully mentioned grabbing a beer to celebrate, referencing the partnership with Bud Light earlier this year.
“I just love you all so much — thank you, thank you, thank you!” Mulvaney exclaimed, receiving applause from the audience. “I’m going to go have a beer, and I love you!”
Advocating for Trans Rights
In addition to the light-hearted moment, Mulvaney also addressed the issue of transphobia and hate, urging the audience to support transgender individuals publicly and proudly.
The partnership between Mulvaney and Bud Light occurred in late March, when the beer company presented the influencer with a commemorative can to mark the one-year anniversary of Mulvaney’s transition.
Backlash and Financial Impact
Following the partnership, Bud Light and its parent company, Anheuser-Busch, faced significant backlash from consumers. The heir of Anheuser-Busch even claimed that his ancestors “would have rolled over in their graves.” As a result, the company reported a loss of nearly $400 million in the second quarter.
As a response, Anheuser-Busch recently announced the sale of eight of its labels to Tilray Brands, a cannabis company based in New York City. This acquisition will elevate Tilray Brands to the fifth-largest craft beer business in the United States.
Mockery and Music
Country singer John Rich joined in on the Bud Light controversy by releasing a music video for his song ”I’m Offended.” The video humorously portrays a man drinking a can of “sissy beer” in a bar before a woman takes it away and replaces it with a different beer.
