Earle-Sears targets Spanberger’s connection to Biden’s ‘national security’ risk – Washington Examiner

In the lead-up to the 2025 gubernatorial election in Virginia, Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears (R-VA) is criticizing former Representative Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) for her connections to President Joe Biden, alleging that these associations pose a “national security” risk. Earle-Sears argues that Spanberger knew about Biden’s mental acuity issues before recent reports came to light, making her untrustworthy regarding Virginia’s safety. Spanberger, who is currently leading in polls and fundraising efforts, counters by asserting her own military background and expressing concerns that Earle-Sears is simply trying to distract from her own record. Both candidates are trying to position themselves as the stronger choice for Virginia’s future as they gear up for the election. Earle-Sears also hopes to gain support from former President Donald Trump, who previously endorsed a Republican candidate in the state.

Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R-VA) argued that former Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) could not be trusted to protect Virginia, citing her connection to former President Joe Biden and the “national security” risk he posed to the nation.

Earle-Sears and Spanberger are the respective Republican and Democratic nominees for Virginia’s 2025 gubernatorial election, with Earle-Sears targeting Spanberger’s record in Congress ahead of the election. This month, multiple reports on the 2024 election said Biden did not have the mental acuity to continue serving in office, something Earle-Sears argued “everybody knew,” including Spanberger, before the reports came out.

“And she kept bragging that she was in constant touch with Joe Biden, talked to him all the time, that means she knew he was not all there,” Spanberger argued on Fox News’s Fox & Friends. “And that’s a national security issue for me because China knew it, Russia knew it, all of the other rogue nations knew it, and she said nothing. So she cannot be trusted with our safety and security. As a Marine, I know a little something about that.”

Spanberger is currently leading in polling and fundraising, raising $6.7 million in the first three months of 2025. However, Earle-Sears argued that due to the commonwealth’s legislative session, she was only allowed to fundraise for one month, in which she raised $3 million.

However, the lieutenant governor said she is “gaining” on her opponent despite the time constraints on her fundraising period. She also dismissed polling that put her opponent at a 5% lead, saying her “internal polls” showed otherwise.

President Donald Trump has yet to weigh in on Virginia’s 2025 gubernatorial election. However, Earle-Sears said the president is “absolutely” welcome to aid her in her bid for the governor’s mansion. In 2021, Trump gave his endorsement to Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA), then-gubernatorial candidate, who won the election against former Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D-VA).

Earle-Sears has also targeted Spanberger’s record as a Democratic lawmaker since becoming the gubernatorial nominee. She compared electing Spanberger as governor to hiring “an arsonist to put out the fire.” The lieutenant governor cited how Spanberger voted for Biden’s “$1.9T ‘Rescue Plan,’” and that Virginia residents “can’t afford more of her ‘solutions.’”
