A Bold Plan to Tackle Crime: Ecuadorian Presidential Candidate Vows to Send Violent Criminals to Prison Ships
A presidential candidate in Ecuador has made a daring promise to deal with the country’s most dangerous criminals. Daniel Noboa, who finished second in the recent presidential election, plans to put violent offenders on prison ships located thousands of miles out at sea. In an interview with Agence France-Presse (AFP), Noboa expressed his determination to address Ecuador’s issues of violence and drug trade.
“Groups of narco-terrorists are involved here. We are living through a war,” Noboa told AFP.
Concerns about his safety are evident, as Noboa was interviewed inside a well-guarded van, wearing a bulletproof vest, and surrounded by a team of bodyguards. This caution is understandable, considering that a prominent candidate, Fernando Villavicencio, was recently assassinated for his stance against crime in Ecuador.
“I am saying similar things to him,” Noboa said. “Maybe they will kill me too.”
Ecuador’s prisons have gained notoriety for their dangerous conditions, often controlled by criminal gangs. Just last month, a violent uprising in Guayaquil’s Litoral Penitentiary resulted in the deaths of 31 people, with some victims being beheaded. The dire situation in Ecuador’s prisons has led Noboa to propose his unconventional solution.
One of Noboa’s reforms includes placing violent criminals in prison ships “thousands of miles out at sea,” as AFP reports.
By leasing ships and implementing armed guards, Noboa believes this approach could swiftly address the problem. Ecuador’s current president, Guillermo Lasso, supports Noboa’s stance, acknowledging the urgent need for change.
While Noboa acknowledges that building maximum-security prisons will take time, he emphasizes the importance of taking strong measures to reduce violence and provide opportunities for the youth.
“You can’t change the world in a year and a half, but you can change key things,” Noboa stated.
In October, Noboa will face off against Luisa Gonzalez, the frontrunner and a protege of Ecuador’s former socialist president, Rafael Correa. The outcome of the election will determine whether Noboa’s bold plan becomes a reality.
