Edison will now face Wilcox of Santa Clara in a neutral-site game on September 22. The game will be played at Bakersfield College’s field, which was made available thanks to the connections of Coach Jeff Grady. The college is providing the facility free of charge, demonstrating their commitment to the community.
Edison officials had exhausted all leads until Coach Grady spotted an opportunity on a state-wide coaches’ email chain. Wilcox had a bye week and needed a game to fill their schedule, making them the perfect match for Edison. The two teams quickly found a venue that would work for both schools.
“We couldn’t go all the way down there because it’s too far,” said Wilcox coach Paul Rosa. “But [Bakersfield] is a long trip that we can do in one day. We just had to think outside the box.”
Bakersfield College stepped in to make the game possible, with their athletic director, Reggie Bolton, coordinating the arrangements. The college’s field, known for hosting high school playoff action, will be open for the game, allowing spectators to attend for free.
“This is not about us making money off it,” said Mr. Bolton. “It’s a great opportunity for us to meet student-athletes from different parts of the state and showcase our campus. It’s a win-win for us and for them.”
The hospitality of Bakersfield College has not gone unnoticed by Edison officials. “They’ve been really good to us,” said Athletic Director Rich Boyce. “It’s huge that we can get this game in because of what they are doing for us.”
While the outcome of the game is uncertain, the fact that it is happening at all is a victory in itself. Both teams are grateful for the opportunity to play and complete their 10-game schedule.
“How it came together is still kind of hard to believe, but it did and here we are,” said Coach Grady. “The players deserve an opportunity to play 10 games, and they’re going to get it.”
