Thousands of eggs distributed to Costco stores across the South were “not intended for retail distribution” and were recalled due to a possible salmonella contamination.
Handsome Brook Farms voluntarily recalled 10,800 units of Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised 24-count eggs because they “have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella,” the Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday.
The recalled eggs began distribution on Nov. 22 to Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
“The recall was initiated after the company determined that eggs not intended for retail distribution were instead packaged and distributed in retail packaging,” Handsome Brook Farms said in its recall announcement. “Additional supply chain controls and retraining are being put in place to prevent recurrence.”
According to Handsome Brook Farms, any egg units with a use-by date of Jan. 5, 2025, and codes P1363 and 327 are a part of the recall. The egg cartons have the UPC 9661910680 and have a “Kirkland Signature” label on the top.
Although no illnesses have been reported, Handsome Brook Farms has urged consumers who have purchased the product to immediately return it to their local Costco for a full refund or dispose of the eggs.
Symptoms of a salmonella infection range from diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps and typically begin anywhere from six hours to six days after ingesting something contaminated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Recovery can happen after four to seven days with no treatment, but children, elderly people, and those with compromised immune systems are especially susceptible to salmonella infections and may have more severe symptoms that require hospitalization or medical treatment.
