El Chapo’s son sent to the U.S. from Mexico.
Ovidio Guzmán López, Son of “El Chapo,” Extradited to the U.S.
México has handed over Ovidio Guzmán López, the son of notorious cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán, to the United States.
According to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, Ovidio has been extradited to face charges related to drug trafficking, money laundering, and other criminal activities.
The son of the cartel leader is believed to have overseen the production and trafficking of fentanyl from China to Mexico and then into the U.S.
“This action is the most recent step in the Justice Department’s effort to attack every aspect of the cartel’s operations,” Garland said.
Ovidio was apprehended in Sinaloa city, Culiacán on January 5th of this year.
Following his arrest, the city experienced a surge in violence, with alleged cartel members setting cars on fire and engaging in carjackings.
In 2019, a previous attempt to capture Ovidio, known as “the mouse,” was aborted due to the violent response from his cartel allies.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California indicted Ovidio in April of this year on charges related to drug trafficking, money laundering, and violent offenses associated with his father’s arrest and extradition in 2017.
His three brothers were also indicted but were not in custody at the time.
Prosecutors allege that he, along with his brothers, engaged in bribery, murder, kidnapping, and other violent crimes against law enforcement, rival drug traffickers, and cartel members.
His father, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán, was convicted in 2019 and is currently serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison in Colorado. However, his mother was released from prison on Wednesday after serving less than two years for her involvement in managing El Chapo’s multibillion-dollar narcotics business.

To combat drug trafficking and organized crime. This raises several questions:
Son in the United States.
The extradition of Ovidio Guzmán López, the son of infamous cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán, to the United States has been completed by Mexico. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has stated that Ovidio will face charges related to drug trafficking, money laundering, and other criminal activities.
Ovidio is believed to have overseen the production and trafficking of fentanyl, a highly potent synthetic opioid, from China to Mexico and then into the United States. This illicit trade has contributed to the worsening opioid overdose crisis in the U.S.
Attorney General Garland has described this action as the latest step in the Department of Justice’s effort to dismantle the operations of the cartel. The cartel, headed by Ovidio’s father, has been a major player in the drug trade for many years.
It is important to note that Ovidio’s extradition comes after his arrest in Sinaloa city, Culiacán earlier this year. Following his arrest, the city experienced a surge in violence, with alleged cartel members engaging in carjackings and setting cars on fire.
This is not the first time that authorities have attempted to capture Ovidio. In 2019, a previous attempt was aborted due to the violent response from his cartel allies. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California indicted Ovidio in April of this year on charges related to drug trafficking, money laundering, and violent offenses associated with his father’s arrest and extradition in 2017.
In addition to Ovidio, his three brothers were also indicted, but they were not in custody at the time. Prosecutors allege that Ovidio and his brothers were involved in bribery, murder, kidnapping, and other violent crimes against law enforcement, rival drug traffickers, and cartel members.
Ovidio’s father, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán, was convicted in 2019 and is currently serving a life sentence in a maximum-security prison. The extradition of Ovidio to the United States signifies a significant move in holding members of the cartel accountable for their criminal activities.
