El Segundo Little League Team Prepares for U.S. Championship Game
The all-star team from El Segundo is gearing up for the U.S. championship game of the Little League World Series. On August 26, they will face off against the Needville Little League all-star team from Texas in a highly anticipated rematch. Needville was the team that knocked El Segundo into the elimination bracket with a 3-1 victory on August 21.
Despite the setback, El Segundo fought their way back, winning three games in three days to secure their spot in the U.S. championship game. Their most recent victory came in a thrilling 2-1 win over the Northeast Seattle Little League all-star team on August 24.
Needville, on the other hand, has been on a winning streak, triumphing in 14 consecutive games. They secured their spot in the U.S. championship game with a 1-0 victory over Northeast Seattle on August 23. With a record of 20-1 in five tournaments this summer, Needville is a formidable opponent.

Needville faced some challenges in the Texas East Section 4 tournament, losing their second game to the all-star team from the Hallettsville Little League. However, they bounced back with a 6-2 victory over the Sweeny Little League and a dominant 19-0 win against Hallettsville, which ended after three innings due to the run rule.
In the tournament’s final game, Needville defeated Hallettsville 1-0 to claim the championship title.
El Segundo has also had an impressive run, with a record of 18-2 in five tournaments. Their only other loss came in the opening game of the Southern California State Tournament, where they were defeated 4-3 by the all-star team from the Sherman Oaks Little League. However, they redeemed themselves with a 3-2 victory in the rematch later that day.
This year’s U.S. championship game will mark a significant milestone for Los Angeles County, as it is the first time since 1994 that a team from the county has reached this stage. In 1994, the all-star team from the Northridge Little League emerged as the U.S. champions, led by future USC and NFL quarterback Matt Cassel.
The winner of the U.S. championship game will go on to face the victor of the international championship game between teams from Taoyuan, Taiwan and Willemstad, Curacao, for the world championship on August 27. The third-place game will be played between the losing teams of the U.S. and international championship games on Sunday.
Los Angeles County teams have a strong history in the Little League World Series, having won the championship three times. The Granada Hills National Little League emerged victorious in 1963, while the Long Beach Little League clinched back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993.
In their recent game against Northeast Seattle, El Segundo took an early lead, scoring in the first two innings. Despite a late comeback attempt by Northeast Seattle, El Segundo held on for the win. The game ended with a dramatic play as El Segundo’s shortstop, Louis Lappe, made a crucial force out at second base to secure the victory.
Declan McRoberts and Brody Brooks were instrumental in El Segundo’s success on the mound, limiting Northeast Seattle to just one run. McRoberts also contributed offensively, driving in a run with a single in the first inning.
El Segundo’s journey in the Little League World Series has been filled with excitement and determination. As they prepare for the U.S. championship game, the team and their supporters are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to bring home the title.
