Spanish soccer chief’s mother begins hunger strike over his suspension for kissing women’s star player.
Spanish Soccer Federation President’s Mother Goes on Hunger Strike in Church
In a dramatic turn of events, the elderly mother of the president of the Spanish soccer federation has locked herself inside a church and embarked on a hunger strike. This comes after her son, Luis Rubiales, was suspended for kissing a member of Spain’s women’s team on the mouth following their victory in the Women’s World Cup.
The incident, in which Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso on the lips, led to FIFA provisionally suspending him. Rubiales’ mother, Angeles Bejar, has called the treatment of her son an “inhumane witch-hunt” and is demanding justice.
“I want Hermoso to tell the truth and maintain her original version of events,” Bejar stated during her hunger strike in the Divina Pastora church in Motril.
Bejar believes that there was no sexual abuse involved, as both parties consented to the kiss. She questions why her son is being subjected to cruelty and wonders what lies behind this entire story, asserting that her son is incapable of harming anyone.
Rubiales had claimed that he had asked Hermoso for permission to kiss her, and she had agreed to a “little peck.”
Hermoso, however, took to Twitter to refute Rubiales’ claims, stating that the incident was non-consensual and that she felt vulnerable and victimized.
Outside the church, Rubiales’ cousin, Vanesa Ruiz Bejar, spoke to reporters, expressing her family’s suffering and the unfairness of the situation. She emphasized that her cousin has already been condemned without a fair trial and highlighted the existence of videos and audio recordings as evidence.
“Jenni, say the truth. Why have you changed your version three times? We have suffered a lot due to the harassment we’re facing,” Ruiz Bejar pleaded.
The Spanish federation (RFEF) has announced its intention to take legal action against Hermoso, supporting Rubiales’ claim that she lifted him off the ground before the kiss. They have presented photographic evidence to back their case.
Despite the controversy, Olga Carmona of the Spanish women’s team, who scored the winning goal, remains focused on celebrating their World Cup victory and refuses to let the incident overshadow their achievement.
“I am not going to let anyone cloud the fact that we have been world champions,” Carmona asserted.
As the situation unfolds, the truth behind the kiss and its consequences will continue to be debated, with legal actions being initiated by both sides.
