Elise Stefanik returns to House GOP leadership and committees: ‘Honored’ – Washington Examiner
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) has been appointed as the chairwoman of House Republican leadership by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). This proclamation follows her withdrawal from consideration for the role of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, a decision made by former President donald Trump to maintain Republican seats in Congress during recent special elections. Stefanik aims to implement an “America First” agenda, emphasizing border security, national security, economic growth, and combatting antisemitism. She will also retain her roles on the House Intelligence Commitee and the Armed Services and Education and Workforce Committees. With this appointment, Stefanik returns to a meaningful leadership position within the House, where Republicans currently hold a slim majority of 220-213.
Elise Stefanik returns to House GOP leadership and committees: ‘Honored’
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) announced that Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) has been appointed as chairwoman of the House Republican leadership.
President Donald Trump pulled Stefanik’s nomination to serve as ambassador to the United Nations last month ahead of Florida’s two Congressional special elections, saying it was “essential that we maintain EVERY Republican Seat in Congress.” While Republicans won both races, the House GOP still maintains a slim majority.
“We are happy to formally announce Rep. Stefanik’s return to the House leadership table,” Johnson said in a statement. “Our Conference will be once again well-served by her strong communications abilities, command of the issues, and many years of leadership experience as we advance President Trump’s America First agenda.”
“Throughout this process, she has demonstrated her deep devotion to our cause and our country. We will be running on all cylinders with Elise back on the team,” the speaker added.
Prior to Stefanik’s nomination to serve in the Trump administration, she served as chairwoman of the House GOP Conference, but she relinquished her role, expecting to take the ambassadorship position. Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI) was voted in to take Stefanik’s place.
“I am honored to be appointed Chairwoman of House Republican Leadership to lead House Republicans in implementing President Donald Trump’s mandate from the American people for an America First agenda that includes securing our borders, strengthening our national security, growing our economy, and combating the scourge of antisemitism across our country,” Stefanik said in a statement.
