Tech mogul Elon Musk denied reports that he’s giving millions of dollars a month to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign.
Just a week ago, the Wall Street Journal reported that Musk is committing $45 million a month to the former president. During an interview with psychologist and lifestyle author Jordan Peterson on Tuesday, Musk called the newspaper’s report false.
“What’s been reported in the media is simply not true,” Musk said on The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast from the Daily Wire. The Tesla founder clarified that he’s not necessarily actively funding the Trump campaign, saying, “I am not donating $45 million dollars a month to Trump.”
Musk said he did indeed create the America PAC in July but says it’s not meant to be “a hyperpartisan PAC” that donates big dollars to conservatives.
“The intent is to promote the principles that made America great in the first place,” he told Peterson during an interview that lasted nearly 2 1/2 hours, pushing back on claims he is funneling funds to the “Make America Great Again” campaign.
Historically, the billionaire has supported the Democratic Party, backing Hillary Clinton and former President Barack Obama, as well as President Joe Biden’s bid for election in 2020.
However, the Space X founder has edged to further right over the past several years, criticizing progressives for “woke” initiatives before endorsing Trump in July. During the interview with Peterson on Tuesday, Musk continued to question “the woke mind virus” he says “essentially tricked” him into gender-transitioning his son.
Still, Musk expressed doubt over Trump’s faithful MAGA mantra. “I wouldn’t say that I’m, for example, MAGA,” he told Peterson. “I think America is great. I’m more MAG — Make America Greater.”
