Elon Musk mentioned that X was contacted by Congress on Wednesday evening
Elon Musk revealed that X (formerly Twitter) received a Congressional inquiry concerning actions in Brazil. The situation escalated after a Brazilian court ordered account blockages on X, leading to scrutiny by Brazil’s Supreme Court. X Corp. was legally obliged to block accounts without divulging details, sparking a contentious issue with free speech implications. Musk’s disclosures shed light on the unfolding events.
Elon Musk took to X, formerly Twitter, late Wednesday night, claiming that the social media platform had just received an official inquiry from Congress pertaining to an ongoing situation in Brazil where X is reportedly being censored and restricted.
“X just received an inquiry from the US House of Representatives regarding actions taken in Brazil that were in violation of Brazilian law,” Musk posted shortly before midnight on Wednesday. “There were hundreds, if not thousands. This is getting spicy.”
Brazil and Musk reportedly were at an impasse over a Brazilian court order to block certain accounts on X. The situation intensified over the weekend when Brazil Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes launched an inquiry into Musk after the social media platform owner stated he would reactivate accounts on X that Moraes previously ordered blocked.
Musk first posted about the account restrictions in Brazil over the weekend. Initially little was known about which accounts were being blocked in the country, or why such action was being taken.
Then, X Corp. announced on Saturday that they were “forced by court decisions” in Brazil to block accounts and were not allowed to provide information regarding the decision.
“X Corp. has been forced by court decisions to block certain popular accounts in Brazil. We have informed those accounts that we have taken this action,” the corporation’s Global Government Affairs Account posted on the platform on Saturday.
“We do not know the reasons these blocking orders have been issued,” the account added. “We do not know which posts are alleged to violate the law. We are prohibited from saying which court or judge issued the order, or on what grounds. We are prohibited from saying which accounts are impacted. We are threatened with daily fines if we fail to comply.”
Musk then disclosed some of the judge’s actions against X and the company’s employees in another post on Saturday night.
“This judge has applied massive fines, threatened to arrest our employees and cut off access to X in Brazil,” Musk posted. “As a result, we will probably lose all revenue in Brazil and have to shut down our office there.”
“But principles matter more than profit,” Musk added.

On Tuesday, the X account “DogeDesigner” posted an alleged recording of Musk elaborating on the conflict.
“We kept getting these demands from Judge Alexandre to suspend accounts of sitting members of the parliament and major journalists,” Musk said. “We could not tell them that this was at the behest of Alexandre, we had to pretend that it was due to our rules.”
