Elon Musk Receives Community Note for Announcing Removal of ‘Block’ Feature

Elon Musk Faces Community Backlash After Announcing Removal of ‘Block’ Feature on X

Elon Musk, the renowned entrepreneur, recently stirred up controversy on X, formerly known as Twitter, when he ‍revealed plans to eliminate the‌ “block” feature from the app.

In a tweet on Friday, Musk ⁤stated, “Block is‌ going to ⁢be deleted as a ‘feature’, ⁢except for DMs.”

This announcement prompted a swift response in the form of a community⁤ note, which initially claimed that Musk was ‍unable to ⁢remove the “block” feature due to Apple’s App Store and ⁤Google’s Play Store ⁢policies.

The note began with the statement, “Elon Musk cannot ⁤do this.”

The note also included ⁣two links ⁤— one to ⁤ Apple guidelines ⁤and the other to Google policies.

According to Apple’s user-generated content⁣ section, ⁢apps with user-generated content must have ⁤the ability to block abusive users from the service.

Should X delete⁣ the block feature?

function ‌ffp_getCookie(cname) {
var name = ⁢cname + “=”;
var decodedCookie = decodeURIComponent(document.cookie);
var ca = decodedCookie.split(‘;’);
for(var i = 0; i

Google’s⁣ policy contains similar wording.

A comment from‍ an account‌ called ‍”Tesla Owners” pointed out that even Musk can receive a community note,⁤ prompting Musk to respond, “True, however that⁤ note is incorrect and the community‌ already voted it away.”

A revised note no longer claims that Musk “cannot” make this⁤ change, but it does highlight ⁣the⁢ potential consequences of X removing the block feature, stating that it “could⁤ lead ‌to X being removed from these⁣ platforms.”

Jack Dorsey, the founder‌ of ⁣ Twitter, ⁢expressed support for Musk’s decision to eliminate the block feature.

Dorsey used the⁢ 100 percent emoji and added, ”mute only.”

Mute is an option that allows users to remove tweets from their ⁢timeline without ⁤blocking the account ‍they originated from.

Musk, who describes himself⁢ as a “free speech absolutist,” has been dedicated to making changes on the‌ platform ever since it was ⁢ announced that he would be‌ acquiring it⁢ in⁣ April 2022.

“Free speech is⁢ the‍ bedrock of ⁣a ⁢functioning⁤ democracy, and Twitter is⁣ the digital town square ⁤where matters vital to the future of humanity are⁢ debated,” Musk emphasized.

“I⁣ also‌ want to make Twitter ⁢better than ever by enhancing the ⁤product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, ⁢and authenticating all humans.

“Twitter has tremendous potential ⁣— I⁣ look forward to working with the company and the ⁢community of ⁤users ‍to unlock it,” ‌ Musk ⁣ concluded.
