The UK government’s decision to expand a pilot program for HIV testing in hospital emergency departments was hailed by Sir Elton John as “truly wonderful news.” The program, which has already identified numerous undiagnosed cases, will automatically test anyone 16 years and older who undergoes blood testing at an emergency hospital.
“Automatic testing gets to people earlier, which means less HIV transmission, less illness, less death, and by the estimate of health economists, 50 million pounds ($63 million) saved for the NHS,” Britain’s health service, John said.
Health experts plan to expand the initiative to 46 additional emergency rooms across England, aiming to reach the estimated 4,500 individuals who may be HIV positive but unaware of their status.
In line with World Health Organization targets, the United Kingdom aims to achieve zero HIV transmissions in England by 2030. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak commended Sir Elton John’s AIDS Foundation for its impactful work in raising awareness, reducing stigma, and saving lives.
