Embattled GOP Rep. George Santos Files Paperwork For Re-Election
Rep. George Santos (R-NY), filed paperwork to run for re-election on Tuesday. This signalled that the controversial Republican would like to fight for another term as he faces an ethics probe and calls for resignation from his party.
Santos has raised over $5,000 already, so he must file for re-election at the Federal Election Commission before Tuesday’s deadline. Filing does not mean Santos must run in 2024. Before being sworn in to office in January, the freshman congressman had been involved in scandals.
The House Ethics Committee was established in investigation Santos was arrested by Santos earlier in the month, after he made numerous false statements regarding his past and allegedly engaged illegal activities during his 2022 campaign. Santos allegedly “failed to properly disclose required information on statements filed with the House; violated federal conflict of interest laws in connection with his role in a firm providing fiduciary services; and/or engaged in sexual misconduct towards an individual seeking employment in his congressional office,” According to a statement made by the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Ethics Committee.
Santos has admitted to lying about his resume to voters, including where he went to college and whether he worked for Citigroup or Goldman Sachs. The Republican congressman claimed that Santos started an animal charity, which saved thousands of cats and dogs between 2013 and 2018, although there is no proof.
The majority of Santos’ District is represented by the Nassau County Republican Party. It has stated that it will not support a reelection campaign by Bloomberg. reported.
“Whether or not George Santos indicates he will run for reelection has no bearing on the position of the Nassau County Republican Committee,” said Nassau County Republican Chairman Joseph Cairo Jr. “He will not receive the Nassau GOP’s endorsement for reelection in 2024. If he decides to run, we will oppose and beat him. He has no place in public service and I again call on him to do the very first honorable thing in his Congressional career — resign!”
Santos tweeted last month that he was open to stepping down after having indicated that he could if enough constituents asked him to. “I’m not leaving, I’m not hiding and I am NOT backing down.”
