Tony Leung receives prestigious lifetime award at Venice, evoking strong emotions.
Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award for Tony Leung Chiu-wai
Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai was honored with the prestigious Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday. The audience rose to their feet, applauding and cheering, as Leung wiped away tears of joy.
Speaking to Reuters TV, Leung expressed his gratitude, saying, “It is like a dream come true.”
Leung gained international recognition for his roles in movies made by Wong Kar-wai, such as “In the Mood for Love” (2000) and “2046” (2004).
He also starred in three films that won the coveted Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival — “A City of Sadness” (1989), “Cyclo” (1995), and “Lust, Caution” (2007), directed by Ang Lee, who presented him with the award.
Prior to the ceremony, the 61-year-old Leung spoke to reporters about how acting helped him overcome his shyness. He said, “I used to suppress all the feelings inside. I didn’t show all my feelings in front of others.”
Leung also shared details about his upcoming projects, including the Hong Kong crime thriller “The Goldfinger”, where he will reunite with Andy Lau, his co-star from the 2002 hit “Infernal Affairs”. In this film, their roles are reversed, with Leung playing the antagonist.
In another exciting endeavor, Leung revealed that he will be making his first European film, “Silent Friend”, directed by Hungary’s Ildikó Enyedi. He expressed his dedication to the role, saying, “I plan to spend like eight months (preparing for it) because I’m playing a neuroscientist. I have no idea about what neuroscience is. So I have to read a lot of books and I have to do a lot of university hopping.”
