BU Professor criticizes school for mass layoffs at Antiracism Center.
Former Staff Member Accuses Ibram X. Kendi’s Think Tank of “Unemployment Violence”
A former faculty member at a Boston University think tank run by “antiracism” guru Ibram X. Kendi accused the university of engaging in “unemployment violence” after the center laid off staff members.
“This act of employment violence and trauma is not just about individual leaders. It’s about the cultures and systems that allow it to occur,” expressed Phillipe Copeland, who used to work under Kendi at his Center for Antiracist Research, in a passionate Facebook post. “And too often rewards it. Antiracism is not a branding exercise, PR campaign, or path to self-promotion. It is a matter of life and death.”
Kendi’s center, established in June 2020 during the height of the racial justice movement following George Floyd’s death, recently terminated between 15 and 20 employees, as reported by Semafor. The center had a workforce of 45 individuals as of August.
Copeland expressed his frustration on Facebook, stating that after leaving the Center for Antiracist Research due to witnessing mismanagement, the university prohibited him from leading a fellowship he helped create called “Designing Antiracism Curriculum.”
Following the riots and protests after Floyd’s death, Kendi’s ”antiracist” work brought him lucrative compensation. He received a $625,000 grant from the MacArthur Foundation in 2021 and charges $20,000 per speaking engagement.
