Eric Adams to run as independent in NYC mayor race – Washington Examiner

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that he will run for re-election as an independent candidate, citing challenges within the Democratic primary as a important factor in his decision. This proclamation follows a federal corruption case that was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it cannot be reinstated.Adams, who has seen declining approval ratings and struggled in polls, faced potential difficulty competing against well-known figures like former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who leads significantly in support among Democratic candidates.

In his announcement, Adams emphasized his commitment to New Yorkers over party politics, stating he is focused on the needs of the city’s working population. He expressed regret for any mistakes made during his tenure but highlighted his accomplishments in crime reduction and public safety. The Democratic primary is scheduled for June 25, while the general election will take place on November 4.

Eric Adams to run as independent in NYC mayor race, citing ‘impossible’ Democratic primary

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Thursday that he would seek a second term to lead the city as an independent, opting to avoid a crowded Democratic Party primary.

Adams faced sinking approval ratings and declining poll numbers as a federal corruption case loomed over him. On Wednesday, a judge granted the Justice Department’s request to dismiss the case against the mayor but “with prejudice,” meaning it cannot be refiled.

Less than a day after the judge’s decision, Adams announced his plans for the 2025 mayoral election.

“I have always put New York’s people before politics and party — and I always will. I am running for mayor in the general election because our city needs independent leadership that understands working people,” Adams said in a post on X.

In a video posted alongside his announcement, the incumbent mayor said he decided to run as an independent because his corruption case hurt his chances in the Democratic primary.

“But the dismissal of the bogus case against me dragged on too long, making it impossible to mount a primary campaign while these false accusations were held over me. But I’m not a quitter, I’m a New Yorker,” Adams said. “And that is why today, though I am still a Democrat, I am announcing that I forgo the Democratic primary for mayor and appeal directly to all New Yorkers as an independent candidate in the general election.”

Adams expressed his regret for the “mistakes” he made as mayor while touting his accomplishments, such as his efforts to combat crime and improve public safety in the city.

Had Adams remained in the crowded Democratic primary field, he would have faced popular former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is leading in the polls. Thursday is the final day for candidates to register for the Democratic primary.

ERIC ADAMS CRIMINAL CASE DISMISSED WITH PREJUDICE

An Emerson College-PIX11-Hill poll released late last month showed Cuomo leading the Democratic primary with 38% support, followed by a range of candidates with either 10% or less. Adams had only 8% support, while 17% of those polled signaled they were undecided.

The Democratic primary, which uses ranked choice voting, is scheduled for June 25, while the general election for mayor is scheduled for Nov. 4.
