EU proposes exception for e-fuel combustion engines from 2035
The European Commission has put forward a proposal that would allow for the sale of new vehicles with internal combustion engines from 2035 only if they run exclusively on eco-friendly e-fuels, according to a document published on Tuesday. The Commission has yielded to pressure from Germany and suggested that such vehicles could be among those that are permitted after 2035, but only if their technology can prevent them from running on any other fuels. This proposal has been put forth in the document that outlines the Commission’s proposals to Germany’s Transport Ministry.
The ministry has not responded to the proposal at the time of publication.
The ministry had recently reported that talks with the Commission regarding the proposed end of new combustion engines from 2035 were underway, but an agreement has not yet been reached.
