Everything you need to know about the Republican National Convention

As former President Donald Trump is set to become the nominee of the Republican Party this week at the Republican National Convention, it may be a little different than in years past.

During Trump’s first presidential run in 2016, he was seen as an underdog, with at the time no political experience. In 2020, he was facing unpopularity with some factions of the GOP and unrest due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, he has a stronghold over the Republican Party and there was little question he would be the nominee once the primaries began.

In-person conventions have also not happened in previous years as both the RNC and the Democratic National Convention were moved to a virtual format in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Here is what you need to know ahead of the convention

When is the convention?

The 2024 Republican National Convention runs Monday, July 15, through Thursday, July 18.

Where is the convention?

The convention is taking place this year in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Most events, including Trump’s acceptance speech, will take place at Fiserv Forum, where the Milwaukee Bucks and Marquette University’s basketball team play.

This is the first time Milwaukee has hosted the RNC. In 2020, the city was chosen to host the DNC, but the in-person elements of the event were canceled due to the pandemic.

Both Nashville, Tennessee, and Milwaukee bid to host the event, but Milwaukee was ultimately chosen due to the swing state nature of Wisconsin.

What is the purpose of the convention?

The main event of the convention is the nomination of the presidential ticket on behalf of the party. Nearly 2,400 delegates representing each state will gather to both approve a party platform and formally nominate the presidential ticket: Trump and his yet-to-be-named running mate.

Who are some of the speakers?

Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., is expected to speak on Wednesday, before the to-be-known vice presidential pick. Trump Jr. has been known to favor Vance as the pick.

Dana White, chief executive of Ultimate Fighting Championship, who spoke at both the 2016 and 2020 conventions, is also expected to speak.

Trump’s main former challengers, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was previously denied a speaking role, will speak, while Nikki Haley will not be in attendance at the event and was not given a speaking role.

TV personality Amber Rose confirmed on X that she will be speaking at the event. Trent Conaway, mayor of East Palestine, Ohio, will also speak.
