Ex-Dem Lawmaker Drops Re-Election Bid Over Brain Injury

Harley Rouda, a former US representative of California’s 48th Congressional District has cancelled his candidacy for the 47th Congressional District following a brain injury. After a recent fall, Harley Rouda was taken to the hospital where it was discovered that he had suffered a moderate traumatic brain injury with two intra parenchymal hemorrhages. He assured his supporters that he has begun the path to full recovery and thanked the doctors and medical staff who cared for him and supported him during this trying time. However, his doctors advised him to withdraw from the election race to focus on his recovery for the time being. Harley Rouda scored a victory against longtime GOP Congressman Dana Rohrabacher in 2018 and was defeated in the 2020 reelection bid by Republican Michelle Steel, who was newly elected to Congress at the time.

After California’s redistricting in 2022, Rouda suspended his 2022 campaign for Porter’s 47th District seat. However, following Porter’s announcement in January that she was running to succeed Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Harley Rouda declared his candidacy for Porter’s seat in Orange County. Harley Rouda made it clear that even though he is no longer running, he would still do his best as a private citizen. He also emphasized the necessity of moderates in government who are devoted to serving the greater good instead of engaging in antics, props or sound bites.

Other candidates hoping to win the seat for the 2024 race include state senator Dave Min, a Democrat who was endorsed by Porter, and former state Assembly member, Republican Scott Baugh.
