Ex-FBI informant to plead guilty to lying that Bidens accepted bribes
Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov agreed to plead guilty on Thursday to falsely claiming to federal agents that President Joe Biden and his son Hunter once accepted millions of dollars in bribes from a Ukrainian oligarch.
Smirnov, who had worked as an informant for the FBI since 2010, admitted to making the false statements to the FBI and to evading taxes on more than $2 million in unreported income from 2020 to 2022, according to a plea agreement Smirnov reached with special counsel David Weiss.

Weiss brought the indictment against Smirnov in February while the special counsel was also leading two prosecutions against Hunter Biden. Smirnov’s indictment, at the time, served as a massive blow to House Republicans, who used Smirnov’s claims about the Bidens to help justify their impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden.
Smirnov had reported to the FBI in June 2020 that Mykola Zlochevsky, the founder of Ukrainian energy company Burisma, paid Joe and Hunter Biden each $5 million while Joe Biden was vice president. The payments, Smirnov falsely claimed, were made in exchange for Joe Biden to use his political power to fire a Ukrainian prosecutor who was investigating Burisma.

The fabricated story was convincing because Hunter Biden held a lucrative board position with Burisma, meaning that if Joe Biden deterred investigations into Burisma, it could benefit his son.
Smirnov admitted lying about the claims, which he made on an FBI form known as an FD-1023 in 2020 while Joe Biden was running for president. In his plea agreement, Smirnov also admitted that he had been in contact with Russian intelligence officials.
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) made a redacted version of the FD-1023 public last year, leading Republicans to wield the wild allegations in the media.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) called Smirnov, whose identity was not known at the time, “highly credible” as he led the House’s impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden.
Smirnov has been detained in California since his indictment and is set to be sentenced by early January. Weiss asked the court to sentence him to up to six years in prison and force him to pay up to $675,502 in restitution.
