Ex-GOP Senator Offers Case Study In How The Swamp Works

In late 2021, Republican Senator Roy Blunt from Missouri broke ranks and approved President Joe Biden’s $1.7 trillion omnibus bill, leaving a parting gift to the nation. Now, after announcing that he will not seek reelection in 2022, Blunt has joined a lobbying firm set up by his former chief of staff and his son. Husch Blackwell Strategies revealed that Blunt would launch and lead their new Leadership Strategies Advisory Services, providing all Americans with an opportunity to learn how The Swamp is working behind the scenes.

According to The Hill, Blunt will be barred from registering as a lobbyist for two years, but he will be advising clients. He told POLITICO that he didn’t anticipate registering, perhaps because then he would have to reveal who his clients are. After proudly promoting his experience working with the Democrats to advance infrastructure spending, same-sex marriage, and the electoral reform act, Blunt is now cashing in on his decades-long experience in D.C. and starting to sell his advice. In his new role, “Blunt will concentrate on offering advice on how to navigate both state and local government,” an industry insider told POLITICO.

To succeed in the influence-peddling game in D.C., insiders spend their careers, especially the final few years when they don’t have to worry about reelection, voting for bills that advance the agendas of the Democratic and Republican establishments while enduring the slow decline of the nation. Simultaneously, they establish vital connections, carefully avoiding rocking the boat too much. Eventually, they rely on former staffers, and even their family members, to prop up a lobbying firm, securing a cushy job after retirement where they get paid to block the conservative base from having a say in D.C. decision-making. This is one aspect of Permanent Washington, a term coined to describe the unshakable hold that lobbyists, special interests, and career bureaucrats have over the legislative process, much to the frustration of ordinary Americans.
