Former soldier escapes prison using bedsheets, officials confirm.

Former British Soldier Escapes Prison Using Bedsheets, Prosecutors Say

A ⁣former British soldier who managed to escape ⁤from prison may ‍have pulled off his daring getaway by ingeniously using bedsheets to secure himself to the bottom of⁤ a food delivery truck, according to prosecutors.

Daniel Abed Khalife,‌ a 21-year-old, was apprehended while cycling along‌ a canal towpath in west London on Saturday, following a four-day manhunt.

Khalife ⁤had escaped from Wandsworth Prison,‍ a medium-security facility in southwest London, where he was awaiting trial on charges of‌ terrorism and attempting to spy for an enemy state.

Appearing in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, the ex-soldier had a brief hearing and only spoke to confirm his name and birthdate.

After⁢ the hearing,⁤ he was remanded⁤ in custody.

Prosecutor ⁣Thomas Williams revealed‍ that Khalife, who had been working in⁣ the ⁤prison’s kitchen, allegedly managed to escape by fastening himself to the catering truck using “material which‍ may have been from bed sheets.”

Williams further explained that the police⁢ discovered the material beneath the⁤ truck, complete with ⁣clips at each end and marks consistent with someone having been there.

Khalife was awaiting trial for violating Britain’s Official Secrets ‌Act by gathering information‍ “that could be useful to an enemy,” ⁢as well as planting fake‌ bombs at a military base.

Earlier this year, he was discharged from the British ⁤army following his arrest ⁣and had vehemently denied the allegations against him.

His trial was scheduled for⁤ November.

In addition ‌to the charges he already faced, Khalife ⁤is now also accused ‍of escaping‍ custody. He is expected to appear for ⁢another hearing at⁣ the Central Criminal Court on September 29.

The prison break triggered helicopter searches in London ⁢and heightened‌ security checks at major transportation hubs, particularly ⁢in and around the Port of Dover, the⁢ primary boat crossing between England and‌ France.
