Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen considering Democratic congressional run.
Michael Cohen Considering Run for Congress as a Democrat
Convicted felon and former Donald Trump lawyer Michael Cohen is contemplating a bid for Congress as a Democrat, potentially challenging high-ranking Rep. Jerry Nadler (D., N.Y.).
“I am interested and there’s a multitude of folks encouraging me to run,” Cohen told Semafor.
Cohen, who received a three-year federal sentence in 2018 after pleading guilty to fraud and perjury, among other crimes, spent just 13 months behind bars.
The longtime Trump lawyer, known for arranging payouts from Trump to porn star Stormy Daniels and model Karen McDougal, has since turned against his former boss. Following his release from prison, Cohen testified in Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg’s (D.) probe into Trump’s payouts.
Cohen’s attorney, Democratic operative Lanny Davis, even claimed that “he sparked the investigation thanks in part to his political connections” to Bragg’s predecessor, as the Washington Free Beacon reported. Republicans have long argued that the Bragg probe is politically motivated.
Cohen is not the only lawyer with a criminal record attempting to leverage their ties to Trump for a political career. In 2018, Stormy Daniels’ attorney Michael Avenatti toyed with the idea of running for president, receiving significant media attention.
Avenatti was arrested in 2019 and has been sentenced to a total of 19 years behind bars, as the Free Beacon reported.
