F1 implements safety rule, disobedient drivers will be reported.
Formula One drivers
In the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix, Formula One drivers will be required to change tires every 18 laps. This new rule is aimed at addressing concerns over potential damage to the Pirelli tires caused by the pointed “pyramid” kerbs at the Losail circuit.
The governing body, the FIA, has made it mandatory for cars to make at least three pit stops during the 57-lap race, unless it is cut short for any reason.
If a car continues to use the same tires for more than 18 laps, it will be deemed to be in an unsafe condition and reported to the stewards, according to the FIA.
Even laps completed in earlier sessions on tires that are reused for the race will be counted towards the total.
Analysis of the tires after Friday practice revealed signs of interior structure breakdown, and similar signs were observed in tires used during the 19-lap sprint race on Saturday, despite the presence of safety-car periods.
The FIA and Pirelli suspect that the issue is caused by “high-frequency interference” when cars run over the kerbs. Drivers have been taking wider lines on corner exits to maintain speed, often sliding across the kerbs in the process.
In an attempt to keep drivers off the kerbs, the track was narrowed in one section on Saturday by painting a tighter track-limit line.
Max Verstappen, who secured his third consecutive F1 title in the sprint race on Saturday, will start on pole position for Sunday’s race.
