FAA Proposes 5G-Safe For All U.S. Aircraft Carriers By 2024
Monday was Monday when the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), announced that they have a proposal in place to require passengers and cargo aircraft in the United States with 5G-safety equipment by 2024.
The agency said Reuters that such aircraft carriers would have to install 5G C-Band-tolerant radio altimeters or approved filters by next year amid concerns from the aerospace industry and the FAA that C-Band 5G — which relies on radio waves at 3.7 to 3.98 GHz — could interfere with flight safety technology such as radio altimeters that use a 4.2 to 4.4 GHz range.
Billy Nolen, Acting FAA Administrator The agency believes that it has identified a route for aviation and 5G C band wireless last year. “safely co-exist.”
“[R]adio altimeters cannot be relied upon to perform their intended function if they experience interference from wireless broadband operations,” The FAA stated that it would require “limitations prohibiting certain operations requiring radio altimeter data when in the presence of 5G C-Band interference.”
The frequency overlap problem has been a major issue in the U.S. aviation industry and 5G mobile operators. This led to FAA officials blocking signals from temporary buffer zones at 50 airports last year.
Last year, airline leaders warned that there would be a disruption in the air travel industry. “catastrophic” A 5G deployment could lead to an aviation crisis which could result in almost no traffic.
Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics released a Report This was evident in October 2020. “that the risk will be widespread and has the potential for broad impacts to aviation operations in the United States, including the possibility of catastrophic failures leading to multiple fatalities, in the absence of appropriate mitigations.”
Reports from earlier this year suggested that 5G service could have affected airplane altimeters height data, and landing attempts in inclement conditions. This may have caused disruptions at some U.S. airfields.
Airplane flight manuals could be subject to revision under another proposal from the FAA to prohibit low-visibility landings after June 30 unless the airplane crews have already retrofitted such components.
According to Reuters, Airlines for America, a trade association representing American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and other airlines, stated that “carriers are working diligently to ensure fleets are equipped with compliant radio altimeters, but global supply chains continue to lag behind current demand. Any government deadline must consider this reality.”
The following is an extract from the FAANearly 90% of U.S. airports are equipped with an updated altimeter or have been verified to fly in the 5G C band signal.
CTIA, a wireless communications company, told Reuters “the FAA’s schedule for altimeter updates is reasonable and practical. 5G in the C-band co-exists safely with air traffic.”
CNET reported After posting the directive in the Federal Register, officials will make the directive available for public comments for a period of 30 days.
The directive as proposed would be effective in February 2024.
FAA officials suggested a similar directive for December 2021. It would prohibit passenger and cargo flights near 5G CBand wireless transmitters without approval from the agency.
