Facing Multiple Investigations, George Santos Files for Reelection Campaign

Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) has filed paperwork ahead of a likely House re-election campaign—despite being under multiple investigations and coming under fire for fabricating his background.

Santos, who represents New York’s Third Congressional District filed a signed statement to candidacy with the Federal Election Commission, March 14,

While this does not necessarily mean Santos will run for re-election it is likely he will despite repeated calls to resign—including from within his own party—demands that he has resisted.

Deadline to submit a candidacy statement was March 14,

“Rep. Santos’ campaign team has filed his statement of candidacy as required by the FEC,” Santos stated this in a statement, which was shared with CNBC via a text sent by Joseph Murray’s lawyer.

“No further comments will be offered today.”

Santos stated in the statement that he doesn’t intend to spend any of his own money for his campaign.

The statement said that three committees would have the authority to receive and spend funds for his campaign: Take Back The House 20, which is aligned along with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the Devolder Santos Victory Committee, and the Devolder Santos Van Duyne Victory Committee. This committee supported Santos and Rep. Beth van Duyne (R.Texas), congressional campaigns.

Santos, who is 34 years old, has been in Congress from January. He beat Rob Zimmerman, a Democrat in November with 53.8 per cent of the vote.

Santos has admitted to lying about some parts of his story and has denied fabricating any other parts.

Falsely identifying himself as Jewish, he claimed he was educated in Horace Mann School, Baruch College, and that he worked for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs. He also claimed that he owned an animal charity.

Santos is currently under investigation by both the federal and state authorities.

Brazil indicts him for fraud.

House Ethics Committee has also been investigating Santos. McCarthy said that Santos could be expelled from Congress, if found guilty of breaking the law by the committee.

“If … he has broken the law, then we will remove him, but it’s not my role,” McCarthy spoke Jan. 24, “I believe in the rule of law. A person’s innocent until proven guilty.”

McCarthy has stood by Santos, citing that the people of New York’s Third Congressional District voted him into office.

“He has a responsibility to uphold what they voted for, to work and have their voice here, but at any time if it rises to a legal level, we will deal with it then,” He said.
