FACT CHECK: Did Trump Say He Will Abolish The IRS If Re-elected?
A post shared on Facebook claims former President Donald Trump said he will abolish the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) if re-elected.
Verdict: False
The claim stems from a satirical website. There are no credible news reports to suggest that the former president made these comments.
Fact Check:
The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities alleged in March 2017 that Trump and congressional Republicans would propose “a broad revamp of the tax code that would create new opportunities for tax avoidance.” The IRS is poised to receive over $80 billion in funding through 2031 in a reconciliation package currently being brokered in the Senate should it pass, according to Bloomberg.
The Facebook post claims Trump would sign an executive order abolishing the IRS if he’s re-elected. The post also claims the former president referred “long sought” to end the agency and had been planning to do so before the 2020 presidential election, citing unnamed sources inside his Mar-a-Lago resort.
The claim is baseless. Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to suggest the former president has publicly announced or is quietly planning to abolish the agency should he win. Trump also has not issued any such statement on his official website nor on his TRUTH Social account.
A keyword search reveals that the claim stems from a July 28 article published on the website, Real Raw News. The website includes a Disclaimer on its “About Us” page that indicates it “contains humor, parody, and satire.” (RELATED: FACT CHECK: Did Trump Make This Statement About Cassidy Hutchinson?)
