FACT CHECK: George Soros Insists He Didn’t Contribute to DA Who Charged Trump

Claim: Liberal billionaire George Soros denies contributing to the campaign of Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg.

Who said it: Members of the media and Soros himself.

Why it matters: Republicans have accused Soros, a prominent anti-Trump donor, of influencing Bragg’s decision to charge former President Donald Trump. Democrats argue that these claims are rooted in anti-Semitic conspiracy theories about Soros and his supposed control over the investigation.

Context: Soros is the largest donor to the left-wing group Color of Change PAC, which was Bragg’s biggest campaign contributor. The group pledged to spend $1 million to support Bragg’s campaign, and Soros donated $1 million to them days after they endorsed Bragg. Other committees funded by Soros have also contributed millions to Color of Change PAC. While Soros denies directly contributing to Bragg’s campaign, his donations almost certainly flowed to the prosecutor through Color of Change PAC.

Color of Change has praised Bragg’s decision to indict Trump for alleged hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels, and both the group and Soros are happy with the outcome despite allegations of Soros’ influence.

Analysis: While Soros denies directly contributing to Bragg’s campaign, his donations to Color of Change PAC and other committees almost certainly contributed to Bragg’s election war chest. Regardless of Soros’ influence on the investigation, both he and Color of Change are pleased with the outcome of Trump’s indictment.

Verdict: We rate this claim 3 Clintons.
