During a news conference, Chancellor Guskiewicz apologized to students who were feeling uncertain about their safety and assured them that measures were being taken to address the situation.
UNC Police Chief Brian James stated that it is unclear if the suspect had any connection to the victim and mentioned that the weapon used in the shooting has not been found.
Throughout the lockdown, the university sent multiple alerts urging the campus community to remain sheltered in place.
It took some time to lift the lockdown after the suspect’s arrest as authorities ensured they had the right person in custody. The police also responded to calls about potential victims and gunshots in other areas of the campus.
The building where the shooting occurred is located near the iconic Bell Tower and a campus store.
