Biden’s approval hits new low after 2024 reelection bid launch.
President Biden’s Approval Rating Hits New Low After 2024 Reelection Bid Announcement
In a recent Washington Post-ABC News survey, President Biden’s approval rating has taken a dip, falling 6 percentage points between February and May. The poll found that only 36% of respondents approve of the way Biden is handling his job, with 56% disapproving.
Strong Disapproval on the Rise
While 18% of Americans still “strongly approve” of the president’s work, the share of those who “strongly disapprove” has gone up to 47%. This is a concerning trend for the Biden administration, especially as the country heads towards the 2024 presidential election.
Biden vs. Trump on the Economy
When asked to choose between Biden and former President Trump on who they think did a better job of handling the economy, 54% of respondents said Trump, while only 36% said Biden “so far.” Another 7% said neither.
2024 Presidential Race Rematch
Biden’s announcement of his campaign for another four years in the White House has set the stage for a potential rematch with former President Trump. However, concerns about Biden’s age have been raised, and his brief campaign launch video played clips from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and warned against “MAGA extremists.”
Democratic-Leaning Respondents
Among Democratic-leaning respondents in the survey, 36% said they’d prefer Biden to get the party’s nomination, up 5 points from February, while 58% said they’d prefer the party nominate someone else.
Hypothetical Trump-Biden Rematch
In a hypothetical Trump-Biden rematch, 44% say they’d lean towards the former president, while 38% say they’d lean towards Biden.
- Conducted April 28 to May 3
- Surveyed 1,006 U.S. adults
- Margin of error of 3.5 percentage points
- For the subgroup of 900 registered voters, the margin was 4 percentage points
It remains to be seen how these numbers will affect the upcoming election, but it’s clear that President Biden has some work to do to regain the trust and approval of the American people.
