Fake photos online show Donald Trump and Secret Service agents smiling after an assassination attempt

Multiple posts circulating on social media show former President Donald Trump and his Secret Service agents allegedly smiling after an assassination attempt. However, fact-checkers have confirmed that these images were digitally altered. The original photos, taken by AP News photographer Evan Vucci, do not show anyone smiling. Trump himself has thanked divine intervention for his survival after the incident. Despite the fake images circulating online, there is no evidence to support the claim that Trump and his security team were smiling after the assassination attempt.

Verdict: False

These images have been digitally altered. The original photos were shared on AP Newsroom and show nobody smiling.

Fact Check:

Trump has spoken out about the assassination attempt against him in Butler, Pennsylvania last weekend, suggesting that his survival could be a result of divine intervention, according to CNN. Trump wrote on social media, “It was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening,” the outlet reported.

An X image appears to show Trump with a hand raised above his head, smiling while blood is visible on the side of his face and on his ear. “Think they bought it?” the caption reads.

A second image, posted to Threads, shows Trump surrounded by Secret Service agents who all appear to be smiling while a bloodied Trump raises his arm in the air. “Why are the secret service smiling? STAGED” this post’s caption reads.

These have both been photoshopped, however. Both original images were taken by AP News photographer Evan Vucci, neither of which show anyone smiling. Other photos of the scene can be viewed on AP Newsroom and likewise do not show anyone smiling. Footage of the incident from Fox News also shows no smiles.
