Family members of workers killed in Baltimore bridge collapse sue shipowner – Washington Examiner
The families of three workers who were killed in the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore are suing the shipowner, Grace Ocean Private Limited, following an incident where their container ship, the *Dali*, lost power and struck the bridge. The attorneys representing the victims’ families plan to file a court motion seeking to hold the Singapore-based company legally accountable for the deaths. The incident occurred in late March during a maintenance operation, resulting in the deaths of six out of eight immigrant workers who fell into the water. The bridge collapse has also caused millions of dollars in economic losses and took 11 weeks for repairs to be completed.

The family members of three of the victims killed in the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge are looking to make the owner of the ship that crashed into it held legally liable for their deaths.
Attorneys from the firm representing the family members are planning to file a court motion seeking to hold Grace Ocean Private Limited, the Singapore-based company that owns the Dali, responsible for the construction workers’ deaths.
The container ship hit the bridge in late March in the early morning hours after it lost power, causing the bridge to collapse.
Eight construction workers doing maintenance on the bridge fell into the water, and six of them died. All six of them were immigrant workers.
The collapsed bridge cost millions of dollars in economic losses. It took 11 weeks to reopen the Port of Baltimore.
Matthew Wessler of Gupta Wessler, an attorney representing the families, noted that the cargo ship should have never left its port after it dealt with power outages days within making its route to Baltimore.
He is looking to make the filing by Sept. 24, which is the deadline granted by a federal court case to Grace Ocean Private Limited in its effort to limit lawsuits from the incident, according to CBS News.
Wessler is seeking to make the shipping company pay monetary restitution, labor protections, and work permits to the family members, as some don’t have permanent legal residence in the United States.
“They all have suffered an unimaginable tragedy, losing their loved ones, whether it was one of our clients who lost her husband and partner. Another who lost their son,” Wessler said. “And we think that accountability, or they think that justice here means holding those responsible accountable.”
