Family of Man Allegedly ⁣”Eaten Alive” by Bugs in Atlanta Jail Settles Lawsuit for $4 Million

The family of a man who tragically died in an Atlanta jail cell after being‌ infested with bugs has reached a settlement in their lawsuit against Fulton County. The ⁤settlement amount is a staggering $4 million.

Lashawn Thompson, a 35-year-old man with mental health issues, was arrested⁣ on June 12, 2022, for a misdemeanor simple battery charge. He was placed in the psychiatric wing of Fulton County Jail. However, three months later, on September 19, Thompson was discovered dead in a filthy jail cell, having been “eaten alive” by insects and bed bugs, according to family attorney Michael Harper’s statement on Facebook.

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners voted 6-0 to approve the mediated settlement. Inside ⁤Edition reported that the family will not be making a statement regarding the settlement, as Harper stated, “The Fulton County Commissioners’ vote speaks for itself.”

Activist attorney Ben⁢ Crump, who also represented the family, released a ‌joint statement with Harper following the settlement. The statement emphasized that while they are satisfied with ⁤the⁣ settlements, they are far from achieving full justice. They pledged to continue working with the Thompson family⁢ and the community to prevent such tragedies from happening again.

Crump previously revealed that Thompson had schizophrenia and did not receive the necessary medication during his time in jail. He was neglected for 93 days, resulting in severe malnourishment and dehydration, causing him to lose 30 pounds. The forensic pathologist hired by Thompson’s family concluded that his death was ‌a result of severe neglect and inadequate care.

The Fulton County medical examiner initially listed Thompson’s cause of death as “undetermined.” However, jail ⁢records ‌revealed that officials and medical staff were aware of ⁢his deteriorating health but failed to provide him with the necessary aid. Harper’s Facebook post also mentioned that one⁤ detention officer refused to administer CPR when Thompson’s body was found.

Despite the tragic circumstances, Harper expressed that Thompson did not deserve such treatment and that someone must be held accountable for his death. He described the jail cell where Thompson was kept as “not fit for a diseased animal.”
