Former President Jimmy Carter‘s casket emerged from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia, on Saturday, set to begin his journey to Washington D.C., where he will lie in state.

Carter, the longest-lived United States president ever, died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100.

Less than a week after his death, his body traveled through his hometown of Plains, Georgia, with supporters and family trailing the hearse.

The funeral procession passed his longtime Plains home, where his wife is buried. Rosalynn Carter died in 2023 at the age of 96. Jimmy Carter will later join her in a private burial on Thursday.

The motorcade then passed his boyhood home, now a National Park Service site titled the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm, where he lived until 1941. As his hearse passed, a group of National Park Service rangers and other employees saluted while a farm bell was rung 39 times to represent Carter as the 39th president.

Carter often said time was not measured by the clock, but by the sound of the bell. The same bell that rang within earshot through his childhood — rang as he traveled down the road, and north toward Atlanta. Other memorial events are planned along the route until he reaches the Georgia State Capitol, where he served four years as a state senator and four years as governor before becoming president.

Several prominent officials like Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens (D-GA) and Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) will greet the procession with a moment of silence. Carter’s body will lie in public repose from Saturday night until Tuesday, then it will be flown to Washington D.C.

BIDEN ADMINISTRATION, CONGRESS, AND UNIONS TRY TO ‘TRUMP-PROOF SCIENCE’

His state funeral will be on Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral.

The flags at the U.S. Capitol will be at half-mast during President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration due to Carter’s death. He is not pleased with that fact, and that Democrats are taking pleasure in it.

“The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my Inauguration,” he said in a Truth Social post.

“They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves. Look at what they’ve done to our once GREAT America over the past four years – It’s a total mess! In any event, because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, the Flag may, for the first time ever during an Inauguration of a future President, be at half mast. Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Trump said he would be attending the funeral at the National Cathedral.
