Jake Tapper Interviews ⁤Chris Christie: Does the Republican Party ‍Have an Authoritarian Problem?

In a recent ⁢interview conducted by Jake Tapper, he⁢ posed a question that has ‍been frequently asked by the Left-leaning media: Do Republicans have an authoritarian problem?

Contrary to popular belief, authoritarianism is not limited to‍ Donald Trump’s tweets. It takes various forms and can be found on both the Left and the Right. For instance, executive orders that bypass the Constitution and disrupt the balance of ⁣power within ⁣the government, a tactic employed by Joe Biden, can also be considered authoritarian.

Tapper referred to a column written by progressive journalist ⁢Will Bunch in ‘The Philadelphia Inquirer,’ where Bunch criticized the news media for not openly acknowledging what he⁢ perceives as an authoritarian streak within the Republican Party. Although ⁢Tapper assumed Christie⁣ hadn’t read the column, he asked him about ⁤his condemnation of Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the election.

Christie responded affirmatively,⁣ condemning⁢ Trump’s conduct. However, Tapper pointed out that many Republican⁤ voters ⁣seem to support these actions, leading him to question whether the party has an authoritarian problem.

Christie disagreed,⁢ stating that the⁣ problem lies with Donald Trump⁣ himself. He explained that people often associate Trump with the Republican Party, and opposing Trump is seen as favoring Biden, which many Republicans are unwilling to do.

It is true that for many Republicans, Trump is seen as ‍synonymous with the Republican Party. Consequently, if the choice is presented ⁣as Biden or the Republican Party, a ‍significant number of people will vote Republican.‍ However,⁢ it is intellectually dishonest⁤ for the media to perpetuate the narrative that fascism or authoritarianism solely exists on the Right, while the Left remains untainted.

The reality is that fascism as ⁢an ideology has closer ties to the American Left than the American Right. It emerged as a ‍response to communism but drew inspiration from Marxism, Hegelian politics, and progressive-era ideas. Early supporters of Mussolini included individuals from the ‌Left, including‍ former members of Woodrow Wilson’s and ⁤FDR’s administrations.

Yet, the media continues to propagate the falsehood that the Right is universally authoritarian while portraying the Left as champions of freedom.
