The FBI released documents on Tuesday relating to a previously secret investigation into Ivana Trump, the ex-wife of former President Donald Trump.
In February 1989, the FBI launched a “preliminary inquiry” into Ivana Trump after receiving information from an anonymous source, according to the documents. It is unclear what exactly was the subject of the investigation, but the FBI’s counterintelligence section was involved.
Bloomberg News reported that among the charges that the FBI was investigating was her ties to Czechoslovakia, her home country.
The FBI produced approximately 900 pages of records regarding its investigations into Ivana, but only 190 of those pages were made public this week as a result of Bloomberg’s Freedom of Information Act request. According to Bloomberg, more documents from the cache should be available next month. All of the documents that the FBI disclosed have “blacked-out” names, to hide the identities of those involved.
Ivana’s ties to a man in Czechoslovakia who was allegedly involved in arranging fictitious marriages were at least partially the subject of the FBI’s investigation. The man was assumed to be connected to the nation’s spy agency.
According to the records, Ivana allegedly made a trip to her home country in June 1990 and met with the late president of Czechoslovakia, Vaclav Havel, and received an autographed book from him.
Ivana and Donald Trump were married in 1977 and later divorced in the 1990s. They had three children together. Ivana died from a fall last summer at the age of 73. Her funeral was attended by her ex-husband and the former president, alongside their children and close friends.
