The FDA Proposes Banning Food Additive Used in Gatorade and Mountain Dew
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently taken a stand against a food additive commonly used in popular beverages like Gatorade and Mountain Dew.
The FDA has proposed banning the use of brominated vegetable oil, an ingredient added to sodas and sports drinks to prevent ingredient separation.
While major brands like Coca-Cola and Pepsi have already stopped using this ingredient, it can still be found in grocery store brands and regional beverages.
Interestingly, Japan and the European Union (EU) have already banned the use of this ingredient in food and drinks.
California Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) has also taken action by signing a bill that bans the use of four food additives, including brominated vegetable oil. California is the first state to outlaw these chemicals that are still permitted by the FDA.
Furthermore, the FDA has concluded that brominated vegetable oil is no longer safe for consumption. Recent studies in rodents have revealed its toxicity to the thyroid, a gland that plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure.
Other studies have also indicated potential harm to the liver, heart, and even neurological problems caused by this ingredient.
According to the FDA, “Based on these data and remaining unresolved safety questions, the FDA can no longer conclude that the use of BVO in food is safe.”
The FDA is currently accepting public comments on the proposed ban until January 17th.
If the ban is approved, companies will have one year to relabel their products before the new rule is enforced.
