A federal judge has blocked a California law that would have banned the carrying of firearms in most public places.
United States District Judge Cormac Carney blocked the law on Wednesday, stating that the ruling violates the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and infringes on people’s right to self-defense.
“[The ruling is] sweeping, repugnant to the Second Amendment, and openly defiant of the Supreme Court,” he wrote.
The law, signed in September by Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.), was set to take effect on January 1st.
It would have made it illegal to carry a concealed weapon in 26 locations, including zoos, churches, and public playgrounds.
Regardless of eligibility for a concealed carry permit, the prohibition would still apply. The only exception would be privately held companies that allow firearms on their property.
California Association’s President Chuck Michel released a statement, stating that the court “saw through the State’s gambit.”
“California progressive politicians refuse to accept the Supreme Court’s mandate from the Bruen case and are trying every creative ploy they can imagine to get around it,” he said.
Newsom responded to the ruling, vowing to continue pushing for stricter gun laws.
“Defying common sense, this ruling outrageously calls California’s data-backed gun safety efforts ‘repugnant.’ What is repugnant is this ruling, which greenlights the proliferation of guns in our hospitals, libraries, and children’s playgrounds — spaces, which should be safe for all,” he said.

How does the blocking of the California gun control law affect the profits of gun manufacturers?
Which puts the profits of gun manufacturers ahead of public safety,” he tweeted.
This ruling comes as California continues to grapple with a rise in gun violence. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been over 2,500 gun-related incidents in the state so far this year.
Gun control advocates argue that stricter laws and regulations are necessary to prevent further tragedies.
However, proponents of gun rights argue that these laws infringe upon the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.
California is known for having some of the strictest gun control laws in the country. This includes background checks for all gun sales, a limit on the purchase of ammunition, and a ban on assault weapons.
Despite these measures, California continues to face challenges in reducing gun violence.
Opponents of the blocked law argue that it would have unfairly targeted law-abiding citizens and made it more difficult for them to defend themselves in public spaces.
As the debate over gun control and the Second Amendment continues, it remains to be seen whether the blocked California law will be brought to the Supreme Court for further review.
In the meantime, both gun control advocates and gun rights proponents will continue to push for their respective agendas, highlighting the deep divide on this issue in the United States.
Ultimately, finding a balance between protecting public safety and upholding constitutional rights remains a complex and contentious challenge.
