WASHINGTON (Reuters)—A new search of President Joe Biden’s home in Wilmington, Delaware, on Friday by the U.S. Justice Department found six more items, including documents with classification markings, a lawyer for the president said in a statement Saturday night.
Some of the classified documents are “surrounding materials” The documents are from Biden’s tenure as a U.S. Senator, where he represented Delaware in 1973-2009, according to Bob Bauer, his lawyer. Bauer also stated that some documents were from Biden’s time as vice-president in the Obama administration.
According to the lawyer, the Department of Justice also found some notes that Biden had written as vice president.
The president gave access “to his home to allow DOJ to conduct a search of the entire premises for potential vice-presidential records and potential classified material,” Bauer.
The attorney stated that neither Biden nor his spouse were present during the search. Biden is currently in Delaware’s Rehoboth Beach for the weekend.
Bauer explained that Justice Department investigators coordinated the search before the deadline with Biden’s lawyers. White House personal and White House lawyers were both present at the time.
Biden discovered other classified government records this month at his Wilmington residence, as well as in November at a private desk he kept at a Washington, D.C. think tank after he retired from the Obama administration.
Bauer did not specify in Saturday’s statement where the documents were found in the Wilmington residence. The previously classified documents were located in the garage of Bauer’s Wilmington home and in a nearby space.
This search shows that federal investigators are quickly moving forward with their probe into classified documents found within Biden’s possession. Merrick Garland, the U.S. attorney general, appointed a special counsel in this matter.
Robert Hur, the special counsel appointed during the process is currently investigating how the president handled Obama-era classified files that were recently discovered in Biden’s personal possession.
According to the White House’s report, Biden’s attorneys found all documents that were discovered by Friday’s DOJ search. According to public information, it was the first time that federal law enforcement authorities had searched for documents at Biden’s private addresses.
Republicans have compared this investigation to the ongoing probe into the handling of former President Donald Trump
