Feinstein reportedly puzzled by VP Harris fulfilling duties.
Senator Dianne Feinstein’s Health Struggles
Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has been making headlines lately for her health struggles, which have raised concerns about her ability to perform her duties as a senator. At 89 years old, Feinstein is the oldest member of the Senate, and her recent return to the Senate in a wheelchair after a months-long absence due to shingles has only intensified scrutiny of her mental fitness.
Flummoxed by Kamala Harris
In a recent report from The New York Times, it was revealed that Feinstein appeared confused when Vice President Kamala Harris showed up to be a tie-breaking vote in the Senate. Feinstein reportedly asked colleagues, “What is she doing here?” This is one of the powers of the vice president enshrined in the Constitution, and Harris has cast 29 tie-breaking votes in her role as president of the Senate.
Staff Shielding Feinstein from the Press
In another report from the Los Angeles Times, staff photographer Kent Nishimura shared that Feinstein’s staff “often form a human barrier” between her and members of the media. The Capitol Police and the Senate sergeant-at-arms have also taken steps to restrict press access to the senator. Feinstein’s spokesman denied that her team had asked photographers not to take photographs of her in her wheelchair, citing “safety reasons.”
Democrats Calling for Feinstein to Step Down
Feinstein announced in February that she would not seek re-election in 2024, but some of her fellow Democrats have called on her to step down before her term is up. Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) recently walked back his call for Feinstein to resign, saying he is “hopeful” that she will be able to fulfill her duties.
More Health Complications
Feinstein’s health complications stemming from shingles include Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which can lead to facial paralysis, and encephalitis, a condition in which there is inflammation of the brain. While the encephalitis resolved itself shortly after she was released from the hospital in March, she continues to have complications from Ramsay Hunt syndrome.
Despite these challenges, Feinstein remains committed to her work in the Senate. “Even though I’ve made significant progress and was able to return to Washington, I’m still experiencing some side effects from the shingles virus,” she said. “My doctors have advised me to work a lighter schedule as I return to the Senate. I’m hopeful those issues will subside as I continue to recover.”
Who Will Replace Feinstein?
Three prominent House Democrats — Reps. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, and Barbara Lee — have announced campaigns to replace Feinstein in the Senate. It remains to be seen who will ultimately take her place, but one thing is clear: Feinstein’s health struggles have put a spotlight on the challenges facing older politicians in a demanding and fast-paced political environment.
