Feinstein’s office claims senator was unaware debate had ended in awkward moment.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s Office Explains Roll Call Vote Incident
Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) office has provided an explanation for the recent roll call vote incident during a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing. According to a spokesperson for Feinstein, the senator was preoccupied and unaware that the debate had ended and a vote had been called.
“The senator was preoccupied, didn’t realize the debate had just ended and a vote was called. She started to give a statement, was informed it was a vote and then cast her vote,” the spokesperson said.
The moment on Thursday saw Feinstein interrupted by an aide and committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-WA) before she realized it was a vote and said, “Aye.”
Questions About Feinstein’s Health and Age
Sen. Feinstein, who is 90 years old, has faced increasing scrutiny regarding her health and age in recent years. Reports have suggested instances of confusion, and earlier this year, she was hospitalized for shingles and absent from the Senate for several months. However, Feinstein returned in May and has been actively working since then.
During her absence, some House Democrats called for her resignation due to her position on the influential Senate Judiciary Committee. President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees faced delays in the narrowly divided Senate. However, since Feinstein’s return, the nominees have been making progress once again.
Feinstein has announced that she will not run for another term in 2024 and plans to retire when her current term ends in January 2025. The primary race to replace her in California is shaping up to be a highly contested battle among several members of the House of Representatives.
