Fetterman bemoans Democratic protest during Trump speech – Washington Examiner
In response to President Donald Trump’s recent address to Congress, Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) criticized the Democratic protests that took place during the event, describing them as “a sad cavalcade of self owns and unhinged petulance.” He expressed concern that such actions only served to make Trump appear more presidential and restrained. Many congressional Democrats showcased protest signs with messages like “SAVE MEDICAID” during the speech, a tactic that has faced criticism for being ineffective.
Fetterman noted that this approach may not resonate with the public, likening it to a car alarm that no one pays attention to. He has previously criticized the Democratic Party for its communication style, suggesting that shaming and condescension are detrimental to their message.Other Democratic figures and commentators have similarly lambasted the party’s tactics, calling for a more assertive response to Trump.
Aside from Fetterman’s reflections, various other Democrats also protested, including Rep. al Green, who was removed from the chamber after voicing his objections. some members wore pink in protest and others chose to leave the address early. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), delivering the Democratic response, criticized Trump’s foreign policy, notably his relations with authoritarian leaders. the event highlighted a divide within the Democratic Party regarding effective strategies to counter Trump’s influence.
Fetterman bemoans Democratic protest during Trump speech: ‘Sad cavalcade of self owns’
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) lamented the congressional Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday night, calling it “a sad cavalcade of self owns and unhinged petulance.”
Many congressional Democrats held up black, circular protest signs during the president’s address with a variety of messages such as “SAVE MEDICAID” and “MUSK STEALS.”
“A sad cavalcade of self owns and unhinged petulance,” Fetterman said in a post on X. “It only makes Trump look more presidential and restrained. We’re becoming the metaphorical car alarms that nobody pays attention to—and it may not be the winning message.”
AL GREEN REMOVED FROM HOUSE CHAMBER AFTER PROTESTING TRUMP ADDRESS
Fetterman criticizing his own party is not unusual. He agreed in early February that his own party was “toxic” in comments reflecting on the 2024 election.
“I think their primary currency was shaming and scolding and talking down to people and telling them, ‘Hey, I know better than you,’ or ‘You’re dopes,’ or ‘You’re a bro,’ or ‘You’re ignorant,’ or ‘How can you be this dumb?’ I can’t imagine it. And then, by the way, they’re fascists. How can you vote for that?’” Fetterman said.
Other Democrats and political commentators have blasted the party for their mode of combatting Trump during his address on Tuesday.
Symone Sanders Townsend, a once-spokeswoman for former President Joe Biden, said the signs were “giving bingo.”
“Why are democrats just sitting there? The signs are not landing. It is giving bingo! Sigh,” she posted on X.
“Update—Democrats: Forget the signs,” former Mike Pence aide Olivia Troye posted on X. “Call out the truth. Get loud. Take a stand. They kicked your colleague Rep. Al Green (D-TX) out for making his voice heard. Meet the moment. The Republicans would & have done this to you. Why are you rolling over & playing dead?”
The signs aren’t a new tactic from Democrats. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) held up a sign that said “war criminal” during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress in July 2024.

Other moves that Democrats took to protest Trump’s address included Green’s outburst, which caused him to be removed from the House chamber, several Democrats wearing pink in protest, and some exiting his address early or not attending altogether.
Swing state Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) gave the Democratic response to Trump, notably saying, “I’m thankful it was Reagan and not Trump in the office in the 1980s.” She argued that Trump was “cozying up to dictators like Vladimir Putin.”
