Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu honored Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) during the lawmaker’s visit to Israel, thanking him for his vocal support of the country amid the war in Gaza.

Video of Fetterman’s visit to the country was shared on X in which Netanyahu argued that Israel has had “no better friend” than the Pennsylvania senator. The statement comes as Fetterman has been a big supporter of Israel within the Democratic Party, denouncing protesters opposing Israel in its war against the Hamas terrorist group.

“Senator, welcome to Israel,” Netanyahu said, shaking Fetterman’s hand. “I want to thank you for your courageous statements that show moral clarity and moral courage, and you just say it the way it is. And we appreciate this friendship at all times but especially in these times. So welcome, friend, welcome.”

Fetterman also briefly spoke during the video, reiterating his support for Israel and expressing sorrow for the country amid the war in Gaza.

The Pennsylvania senator has made his support for Israel no secret since the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, partaking in a massive pro-Israel rally in Washington, D.C., in November. Fetterman also received pro-Palestinian protesters outside his home in Braddock, Pennsylvania, in January, with Fetterman responding by going to his rooftop and waving an Israel flag.

Fetterman has also commended the University of Florida’s response to campus protests, many of which occurred toward the end of the spring 2024 semester across campuses nationwide. The senator argued that while protests are a part of free speech, students “can’t take over” an entire campus with their protests.

Netanyahu is set to address Congress on July 24, although some lawmakers are opting out of the address. Among those boycotting Netanyahu’s visit are Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA).
