The assailant cunningly gained entry by posing as a listener before firing two shots at Jumalon. After the attack, the gunman snatched the victim’s gold necklace and fled the scene on a motorcycle, where an accomplice was waiting.
The shocking incident prompted President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to condemn the attack and order the national police to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators. In a statement, Marcos emphasized that such assaults on journalists would not be tolerated in their democracy.
“Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy and those who threaten the freedom of the press will face the full consequences of their actions,” Marcos said in a statement.
Authorities have obtained CCTV footage from the area to aid in their investigation.
Despite immediate medical attention, Jumalon was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. His wife rushed him there following the attack.
Police have stated that they were unaware of any prior threats against Jumalon’s life.
Although the gunman was not visible during the Facebook livestream, investigators are reviewing camera footage from the victim’s house and neighboring properties to determine if any evidence was captured.
The Philippines has gained a notorious reputation as one of the most dangerous places for journalists.
